New Study: Covid-19 May Survive On The Surface Of The Mask For 7 Days

The longer the virus lives on the surface, the greater the risk of contracting the disease through contact.

Studies have shown that novel coronavirus can survive on the surface for 2 to 3 days.

(The Lancet Microbe), the Lancet microorganism, updated this information yesterday. Under the research conditions, novel coronavirus can survive on the outer surface of the medical surgical mask for at least seven days and on banknotes for as long as four days.

Mask outer surface conducive to virus survival

Researchers drop 5 microliters of virus culture solution (10 ^ 7.8 half of the tissue infection dose per milliliter) respectively on the surface covid-19 articles made of different materials, in which the virus content is slightly higher than that of respiratory tract droplets of patients. Dry the article in an environment with a temperature of 22 ℃ and a relative humidity of 65%. After that, at different time points, the article was immersed in the culture solution to extract the virus and its activity was detected.

The covid-19's infectious ability disappears fastest on the absorbent material. It only takes 3 hours to print paper and tissue, and 2 days for wood products and fabrics. Smooth surface of objects is good for keeping virus active. Viruses on stainless steel and plastic can survive for 7 days, and glass and banknotes for 4 days (different materials and time of banknotes are also different). Viral nucleic acids can still be detected after viral infections disappear.

It should be noted that by the 7th day, infectious viruses can still be detected on the outer surface of medical surgical masks.

Has the survival time been longer?

In previous studies, covid-19 can survive for 1 day, 2 days and 3 days on cardboard, stainless steel and plastic respectively, and the time is obviously shorter than the new research results.

The difference in survival time may stem from the design of the study. First of all, the new study increased the virus concentration in the drop, from the previous 10 ^ 5 half of the tissue infection dose per milliliter to 10 ^ 7.8.

Secondly, the previous study used wiping to extract the virus after dropping the virus on the surface of the object. However, the new study adopts the soaking method, and the extraction is more sufficient, which may lead to the extension of the time for detecting the surviving virus.

Wash your hands frequently without touching the mask

In real life, it is more common to touch the surface of an object with hands for a short time, and the risk of infection may be lower than the research results.

However, new research reminds us once again that covid-19 can survive on the surface of objects for a certain period of time. When wearing, taking off and discarding the mask, try not to touch the outer surface of the mask. Don't touch eyes, mouth and nose after accidental contact, and wash your hands in time Change the mask frequently.
